Schedule and my role

Saturday 19th Nov; Chiswick Park Station, White City. Film the drug scene, and anything new ideas.10am - 3pm
Sunday 20th; Hounslow, Humaira's house, 11am - 3pm
Characters needed: Melody and Sheida..
Saturday 26th; Film Melody in hospital, running scenes with Renee and Melody. Also film the chair spinning scene and where Melody knocks on the door.
Sunday 27th; Knife scene with Daniel, and argument scenes with Daniel and Melody. Melody disappearing.
We also had an unexpected filming day in February where we filmed a Melody and Renee best friend relationship scene, and her mother shouting at her.

We all had an equal role in filming and production. As we were in a group of three we thought it would be a good idea for us to star the protagonists in the trailer. Therefore I took on the role of Melody and Humaira took on the role of Renee. We got a friend to fill in and help us shoot all the scenes which involved Daniel (Renees boyfriend) when I was in front of the camera, Humaira and Sheila took on the role to film and we as a team decided on where the camera would go, what shot type we would shoot at and whether we should use high key or low key lighting. When Humaira was in front of the camera me and Sheida took on the role of filming and giving direction to them especially during the argument scenes. I thought it would be good to take on the role behind and on camera as you get a feel of what it's like both ways and you get more involved in both aspects of putting the trailer together.

Most of our trailer is in chronological order because when we carried out the survey most people said they would prefer it to be like that however we didn't do it all that way because we wanted to keep the suspense going.

Throughout our trailer there are some scenes which Include diegetic sound such as characters speaking, Renees phone going off when Melodys mum called because we thought that this would give it more life and show a slight amount of realism. We also had non diegetic sound such as the trailer soundtrack which starts off slowly then builds as the scenes get faster and pacier. We also decided to include the sound from a heart monitor when Melody was in hospital because we improvised this scene in a bedroom and wanted to bring it more to life.

As a group we wanted summit entertainment to be our institution because we looked at many trailers and thought it would fit in well with ours. After watching the Breaking dawn movie trailer, we decided to use summit as it shows a 'professional' side to our trailer as a whole.

why shoot in front of pub?
because we couldnt decide on what lighting to use therefore we thought it would be best to go outside a pub because it  negative connotes violence, drinking and anti social behaviour. We went out at a time there was shadows which is effective and is also a convention of the thriller genre

Shoot outside melody's house.
why?
because it was easy access and we used this when Renee drops Melody off at her house at the beginning of a trailer. we decided to use this shot first as it looks really natural and because we wanted to gradually make it more and more interesting as it went on. I thought that if we were to put a dramatic scene first and then this, people would get bored because the thing that you were looking forward to has already happened.

Pitch

Cadaverous is based around a relationship between two young people and a ghost which is the slight twist. The girl (Renee) the girlfriend realises that its not love between them but Daniel (her boyfriend) is actually obsessed with her. He is the jealous type who cant stand to see her with another guy even if they are just friends. The girl cannot stand to see her with anyone else but himself and when she tells him she wants to leave him things get ugly. He wants to be with her but if thats not possible then he wants her dead as he's a fanatic so decides to try and kill her. This is where Melody fits in the picture. She is Renee's best friend however shes having troubles of her own throughout this film with her mum. She's never allowed out with her friends, she has no social life, she has no brothers or sisters, no Dad just her and her mum. Her mum has always left her trapped inside her house and one day Melody cannot take it anymore and decides to have an overdose of tranquilizers because she is sick of her life. Her ghost is still around when shes in a coma and only Renee can see her ghost. Melody has seen what Daniel is planning and goes to Renee to tell her so that they can escape before its too late.

Synopsis

Melody Davidson (Aishah Kibria) is a 15 year old girl who has recently been getting into alot of arguments with her mother. One evening Melody's close friend drops her home but refuses to come in. Melody's mother becomes angry and tells Melody that she cannot hang out with hre friends as she does not approve of them. Melody becomes overly depressed with the constant arguments and attempts to commit suicide by taking an over dose of tranquillizers. The suicide fails and Melody ends up in coma. Melody's spirit is trapped on earth, meaning she hasn't died nor is she alive.

Renee DiNozzo (Humaira Chuhan) , Melody's close friend, finds out about what has happened but she also has her own problems. Renee is stuck in an stressful relationship but she doesn't know it is also about to become a dangerous one. She spends her days thinking of the arguments and abuse she'd get from her soon to be ex- boyfriend.

Daniel Kaul (Karuhn Nahar) becomes obsessed and controlling over Renee; the relationship becomes too much for Renee so she decides to break up with him. Although Renee doesn't know that Daniel suffers from mental disorder. Daniel sees no point in Renee being alive if she's not going to be with him, so he comes up with a plan to kill her. As Melody's ghost can not be seen, she follows and finds out everything.

At this time Melody is still in hospital and still in a coma. She suddenly has a quick flash of Daniel picking up a knife and suddenly wakes up.She decides that saving her friends life is more important than anything else so she goes to see Renee and helps her get away from daniel safely. Whether Renee gets away from daniel and survives is left open.

Brief Evaluation

Aims of production: To make a 2 minute trailer (thriller genre)
Target audience: 12A (include film classification which is also on the blog)
How does our film appeal to the target audience? It involves a relationship between two teenagers which is on verge of a breakup and theres a twist to the story which is melody the ghost so you expect something different. Not the typical relationship gone wrong.
Genre: thriller
2. What codes and conventions of your chosen genre have you used?
Knife; to show the audience that Daniel is upto something and that he's mental as he wants to try N kill renew because she doesn't want to be with him anymore. We however shot two knives one bigger than the other to show that he is so angry with her that he goes for the bigger one which adds suspense to the trailer.
We also include dramatic sound/music: we used this as it builds up tension throughout the trailer and builds up the suspense and tension which the scenes create. Also because it helps bring the scenes to life and we think that it works well with our chosen genre.
Quickcuts: we used cutaways in some parts of our tension to show the audience a snippet of something exciting which will make them want to watch it and see what was happening.
Dramatic irony: we decided that it would be a good idea if the audience knew what happens because it keeps them hooked into the trailer and it makes them want to keep watching to see if the characters find out what they already know.
Violence: to show the violence which occurs as some people enjoy this more compared to the typical argumentative relationships. This occurs between the boy and the girl (Renee and Daniel) also because complicated relationships do occur in real life so it may relate to some people who watch our film.

How are people represented in the trailer?
Melody is represented as a loving girl who cares about her friends and family. She is however a very lonely girl as she's never allowed out with her friends. She doesn't get on with her mum very well and ends up committing suicide because she is sick and tired of her mum controlling her and never letting her out of the house other than when she goes to school.
Renee is also represented as a sweet girl who loves her friends and family. However she's also the victim as she's stuck in this abusive relationship and is trying to escape from it.
Daniel is represented as a *villan* as he is obsessed with Renee and is jealous if she hangs around with other guys. He always wants her to himself and he gets mental when she says she doesn't want to be with him anymore.
Melodys mum is represented as a horrible character as she's too controlling towards her only daughter and because of her melody kills herself.

How are places represented in the trailer?
The pub represents drunk people (violence) (conflict)
House represents a safe environment
Bedroom represents privacy and safe

If our film was to be released in cinemas it would be shown all around the UK and advertised all over billboards, television and on fast food bags such as mc Donald's happy meals.

What went well with production?
We worked well together, we got on well. We knew our story and had ideas on how we were going to film different scenes. We planned what to wear to fit out character and decided where we were going to shoot each scene.

What could we improve?
Some couldn't turn up to filming which resulted in rescheduling on some days and getting more work jumbled on work that we still needed to do. We had to go and re film some more scenes as it didnt make sense.

Idea of TV Crime Drama

Name of show:- CrimeTeen
Sub genre/hybrid:- Buddy Cop
Characters:-
Two female police officers
other members of police
forensics
teenagers
extras and workers
Audience:- Mainly teenagers however adults may be interested in the programme aswell
Time slot and channel:- 7:00pm BBC1
Length of show:- 30 minutes
Plot for first episode:- The first episode will be based around teenagers. In the first episode the kids will receive letters sent to parents regarding a school trip which will teach them basic life skills in certain situations. During this episode the kids will visit the stadium where the trip takes place along side their teachers. They are taught about taking items off strangers e.g sweets which look like drugs and the effects it can have on them. They are taught about safety on public transport. The workers play an act on the students and one stabs another and runs off which leaves the kids traumatised. After a few of these tricks the kids begin to realise that everything is just one big prank and that everything that is going on isnt real but they could be faced with something similar in the future. They are then taken into a room which looks very much like a house and the class of about 30 kids are split up into 5 groups of 6. The worker shows them pictures of what a real fire looks like and what they should be aware of and he makes an excuse and leaves the building when a fire alarm goes off and they are trapped in the building. Because of the previous acts the workers were doing, the kids saw this fire as a joke and laughed about it and was waiting for the worker to return. What they didn't no is that the fire was in fact real and something had gone wrong inside the building so they had to escape fast.

Another unexpected crime will also take place on the trip where one of the students gets killed whilst wandering off to look around for his phone. Somehow a group of guys who have escaped from prison all dressed in black with face masks to cover their faces attack him and one of them shoot him and run off. A worker finds him a while after and calls the ambulance and police.

It will end with ambulances arriving at the scene, police arriving a few injured kids and one lying on the floor with blood shooting out of his stomach and everyones in a panic. This is so that it keeps the audience locked into it and it will make them want to watch the second episode to see what happens to the kids and so on. The next episode will involve a multiple amount of crimes and cases to make it more *enjoyable* and exciting to watch.

The Bill - Witness - Wall Of Silence

I watched the bill for my homework which was based on the shooting of Carly and the Tito Morientes Case.

Equilibrium: Arguments on the Jasmine Allen Estate. Drugs being sold, gangs throwing parties and girls being influenced to do things they don't feel comftorble with as their boyfriends are part of the gang.

Disruption: One of the gang members girlfriend (Carly) gets shot after standing on the estate with her boyfriend due to a drive by shooting and it was believed that she was pregnant when she died and the rest of the people in the car were attempting to kill her boyfriend not her. It was believed that she was shot to get payback because of a drugs fight that went on between her boyfriend and a man in the car. The investigation starts and more arguments and fights take place on the estate as the case goes on.

Restoration: After a long investigation, the killers are sentenced and Carly's mum and loved ones get justice.

I believe the HERO in this is the family liaison officer as he helped Carly's mum every step of the way and made sure that her daughter would get justice. He took the matter in his own hands at times and generally cared about her and wanted to help as much as he could. In the end, because of him, the family and the members living on the estate recieved justice because of the work that he did.

I believe the Villan in this is Tito Morientes and Marlon as they were part of the gang and because they did not like each other, other innocent people were hurt and killed. They caused the whole problem on the estate and gave their girlfriends a bad name. Also Tito killed Marlons girlfriend and Marlon attempted to kill Tito.

The setting is mainly on the Jasmine Allen estate and in the police station. At times the setting is outside on the estate or in people's houses on the estate.

Practice Shots

The Overview of shots...

Mesmorised Girl:- With this shot we decided that it would be best to show the characters face in front of the camera through the computer screen next to the computer she was sitting at as well as showing the side of her face as you could connect with how she felt and it was very effective.

How did you achieve the shots you made?
- We achieved the shots we made by focusing on lighting, positioning of the camera, the character /characters in the shot, what was going on in front of the camera and the background depending on the scenarios we were given.

Would you use any in your film?
- We would use the same techniques that we learnt today to show different emotions and movement as some were very effective and worked really well and could link into our film.

Representations of Characters

Melody:- Melody is one of the main characters in this film. She doesnt have any family and her mum recently passed away. Due to this Melody takes drugs to try and kill herself as she does not want to live alone. Throughout the film shes taken to hospital and returns as a ghost. She cannot be seen by anyone but does not realise it. Melody knows about Renee and her situation with her boyfriend Daniel and wants to help her but doesnt no how as she is now a ghost. Melody is represented as a very loving character and very bubbly before she lost her mum, now she is represented as a druggie who cant bare to live life alone any longer because she believes she has nothing else to live for and nothing to motivate her in life. Melody is also represented as lonely, sad and depressed as she has no one by her side.

Renee:- Renee is Daniels girlfriend in this film. She is also one of the main characters. Renee is having a lot of problems in her current relationship and doesnt know how to escape from this. Her boyfriend Dniel is very possessive over her and cannot stand to see her with another guy. Renee is afraid that Daniel will go to extreme lengths to keep her by his side. Renee is represented as a very fun loving girl who everyone loves. However throughout the film she is represented as frustrated, tired, angry, upset and left heartbroken.

Daniel:- In this film Daniel is Renee's boyfriend. He always makes excuses when she asks him if he would like to go out and because Renee cant put up with him anymore, she feels its necassery to end the relationship. Daniel is very possessive and doesnt want to let her go. He has know one else he feels closer too and therefore feels its necassary to keep Renee by his side. Daniel is represented as a very mean and aggressive character, he's also represented as possessive and obsessed with Renee as he cannot stand seeing her with another guy even though they may just be friends.

Doctor:- Sheida plays the doctor in this film who helps recover Melody after taking drugs. She looks after her as Melody has nobody else to turn to and is alone. The doctor is represented as a very caring person who's there to help anyone in trouble and need. This shows that the doctor is a soft character with a warm heart which people will look up to even though its the doctors job to look after his or her patients.

Sheida is playing the doctor
I will be playing Melody
Humaira will be playing Renee
Muraad will be playin Daniel
Bullies will be played by four girls...
Sheida
Jaycee
Aysha
Lil

Submarine (After Viewing)

Voiceover and Narrative:- Submarine makes very extensive use of voiceover. The use of voiceover in films is sometimes criticised, as there is a feeling that a film shoul rely on the visual narrative and the narrative conveyed in the dialogue.

What effects do you think are achieved by having Oliver speak directly to the audience through voiceover?
- Having Oliver doing the voiceovers is more effective than anyone doing the voiceover because the audience no that it is coming from the main character. Because of this, the audience can connect with Oliver more because the audience believe the audience is speaking directly to them.

Do you think there is a gap between what Oliver says about himself and the reality that we see on the screen? If so, what effects does this create?
- No because throughout the film Oliver is very open about everything thats on his mind. He's not afraid to say how he feels or what he wants and he makes the audience aware of everything on his mind. If there was a gap between what Oliver says about himself and the reality that we see on the screen, it would make it extremely confusing for the audience to understand the story because he would be saying one thing but then the reality we see on the screen would be different which is not the case.

The voiceover and Literature:-
Submarine is based on a 2008 novel by Joe Dunthorne. The influences of other books, especially JD Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye' (1951), have been discussed un relation to the film.

What sort of feeling and impact can music videos have and what effect could a music video style sequence achieve in a film?

- Music videos are effective in the sense that the lyrics connect with whats going on in the video. There is usually a story behind the words and sometimes its effective if your life or something you've been through connects with the lyrics. The lyrics and the video itself has a huge impact on the audience. It has to be suitable for the audience for them to enjoy it. If the video doesn't reflect on the lyrics then it will not make sense to the audience. This connects with films because between each scene in films, music is usually played. The right music has to be played in order to get the right feel of scene.

can you think of other films which feature extended montage sequences that are quite like music videos?

Film Classification

Films are classified according to their suitable audience. Some films are appropriate for some audiences and some are not. An (R18) rated film is only to be shown in specially licensed cinemas, or supplied only in licensed sex shops and to adults no less than 18 years of age. This is because it may involve sex or strong material/language involving adults. An (18) is only suitable for people 18 or over. A (15) is only suitable for people 15 plus. No on under 15 may see a 15 film in cinemas and no one under 15 may rent a 15 film. A 12A and 12 rated film is where the material shown is only suitable for people 12 years and over. Works classified at these categories may upset children under 12 or contain material which many parents will find unsuitable for them. The ‘12A’ category exists only for cinema films. No one younger than 12 may see a ‘12A’ film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult, and films classified ‘12A’ are not recommended for a child below 12. An adult may take a younger child if, in their judgement, the film is suitable for that particular child. In such circumstances, responsibility for allowing a child under 12 to view lies with the accompanying adult. The ‘12’ category exists only for video works. No one younger than 12 may rent or buy a ‘12’ rated video work. A PG rated film (Parental Guidance)is General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children. Unaccompanied children of any age may watch. A ‘PG’ film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older. However, parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children. A (U) rated film is suitable for all. Universal – Suitable for all. It is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child. But a ‘U’ film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. ‘U’ films should be set within a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror. If a work is particularly suitable for a pre-school child to view alone, this will be indicated in the Consumer Advice.

My Pitch

My idea was about a young girl and boy in a long term relationship. They really like eachother however, everytime the girl would ask the boy if he was free to go out. He would always make excuses and they hardly ever went on dates. In the end the girl decides to break up with the boy as she doesnt think their relationship will last because she believes that he is hiding something from her and she thinks he may be cheating on her. Throughout this film, the girl never knew that her boyfriend had a mental illness and he was obsessed with her. This meant that if he saw her with another boy he would lose it and get jealous. He couldnt stand her talk to any boy apart from himself. After she breaks up with him he goes crazy and gets some people to kill her while shes waiting for her friends to go for dinner.
Genre: Thriller
Rating:- PG
